UCC Bill in the house

Guwahati, 26 May (HS): The Congress party on Tuesday strongly opposed the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, alleging that the term “uniform” in the legislation has been misinterpreted and inconsistently applied.

Congress leader Zakir Hussain Sikdar questioned the exclusion of tribal communities from the ambit of the UCC, asking why indigenous groups have been kept outside the proposed law if the objective is to establish a uniform civil framework for all citizens.

Meanwhile, MLA Nurul Huda stated that his stand would remain guided by the teachings of the Quran. He said, “We will follow what the Quran has directed,” while expressing opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.

The opposition party maintained that the proposed legislation would affect religious and personal rights and reiterated its resistance to the Bill during the ongoing political debate in the state.-----------
