New Delhi, 22 May (H.S.):
Norway announced its 26-member squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Thursday. Premier League champions Arsenal star midfielder Martin Odegaard will lead the team, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is also part of the squad.
The biggest attention, however, was on the selection of young goalkeeper Sander Tangvik. The uncapped Hamburg SV goalkeeper earned the final spot in Norway’s squad. The 23-year-old Tangvik has been selected for the national team for the first time.
There had been considerable speculation over the goalkeeper selection for some time. SK Brann goalkeeper Mathias Dyngeland was injured, while FIFA rejected Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin’s request for a change of nationality. Tangvik was then given a place in the squad.
Norway have been placed in Group I at the 2026 World Cup. The group also includes strong teams such as France, Senegal and Iraq, making it the tournament’s “group of death.”
