Nagaon (Assam), May 16 (HS): Miracal ! the God has punished for the cruelty in Assam. In what locals described as the consequence of crime and brutality against a woman, the prime accused in a robbery case was critically injured in a road accident late Friday night in Assam’s Nagaon district.

Police said the accused, Rajibul Islam, was being taken by a police team to recover a gold chain looted during the robbery at Morikolong area when the police vehicle collided with another vehicle. Rajibul sustained severe injuries in the crash and was admitted to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

According to police sources, both his legs and one hand were badly crushed in the accident. Sub-Inspector Biman Gogoi and two other police personnel also suffered injuries in the mishap.

The accused had allegedly carried out the robbery in Nagaon on April 25 after arriving from Lakhimpur. During the incident, he reportedly attacked a woman, Ruprekha Bhuiyan Saikia, with an iron rod, leaving her critically injured. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment two days ago.

Police later traced Rajibul through CCTV footage and arrested him from the Lekhapani area of Arunachal Pradesh. An investigation into the road accident is currently underway.-----------
