India and Bhutan signed two pivotal agreements on Thursday to fortify energy sector collaboration, announced following a high-level meeting in Thimphu between Union Power Minister Manohar Lal and Bhutan’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering.

Arriving in Bhutan on a four-day visit, Minister Manohar Lal held discussions with Bhutanese Prime Minister Shering Tobgay, reaffirming both nations’ shared commitment to advancing clean energy and sustainable development. A centerpiece was the tariff agreement for the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, jointly inaugurated on November 11, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Power exports to India commenced September 19, 2025, at mutually agreed initial rates.

The Ministry of Power stated the technical framework aims to enhance grid stability, optimize cross-border electricity exchange efficiency, and streamline bilateral power trade. Minister Manohar Lal’s engagements are poised to unlock fresh avenues of cooperation, fostering enduring prosperity across both nations.
