Hooghy, 05 April (H.S.): A 58-year-old woman, reportedly under severe mental stress, died by alleged suicide in Rishra Gram Panchayat area of Hooghly district on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Minati Sen (58). According to family members, her son Bhola Sen returned home around 8:45 pm to find the door locked from inside. Despite repeated calls, there was no response. With the help of neighbours, the door was broken open, and she was found hanging from the ceiling inside the room.

On information, a team from Rishra Police Station reached the spot and recovered the body, which was later sent for post-mortem examination.

Family members said that Minati Sen had been suffering from severe mental stress for some time. She was already dealing with certain mental health issues, which were further aggravated by recent documentation-related complications. Her name appeared as “Minati Sen” in her Aadhaar card, while it was recorded as “Minu Sen” in her voter ID. Due to this discrepancy, her name reportedly did not feature in the SIR list, which added to her distress.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are treating it as a suspected suicide. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.

Following the incident, Tanmoy Ghosh, the Trinamool Congress candidate from the Serampore Assembly constituency, visited the bereaved family on Sunday. He questioned the role of the Election Commission in the matter and said the issue would be raised before Mamata Banerjee.
