Thiruvananthapuram, 04 April (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Kerala over the next two days, prompting the issuance of yellow alerts in several districts.
According to the IMD, isolated heavy showers are likely on Saturday in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, while on Sunday, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki will remain under alert. Heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
Despite the rain forecast, fishing activities along the Kerala–Karnataka–Lakshadweep coasts are not expected to face disruptions at present.
The IMD has also issued a warning regarding thunderstorms and strong winds across the state. From Saturday to Sunday, isolated areas may experience thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. On Monday and Tuesday, similar conditions are expected, with wind speeds ranging between 30–40 kmph.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution, as lightning poses significant risks to life, livestock, electrical systems, and communication networks. People are advised to seek shelter indoors at the first sign of thunderclouds and avoid open spaces.
Residents should keep doors and windows closed during strong winds and avoid standing near them. Electrical appliances must be unplugged during lightning, and the use of landline phones should be avoided. Staying away from terraces, open grounds, water bodies, and trees is strongly recommended.
People travelling during thunderstorms should remain inside vehicles, which offer relative safety, but avoid using two-wheelers. Activities such as fishing, boating, and bathing in water bodies must be suspended immediately during lightning.
The IMD emphasised that early precautions can significantly reduce risks, as lightning may strike even before it becomes visibly apparent.
