Jalpaiguri, 28 April (H.S.): Panic spread in the area after the body of a man with his throat slit was recovered near railway tracks in Dhupguri of Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Ramani Roy (around 65 years old). Police suspect murder and have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to reports, local residents spotted the body lying beside the railway tracks in Barmanpara area under Ward No. 16 of Dhupguri Municipality. They immediately informed the West Bengal Police and railway police. Soon after, police and RPF personnel reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victim’s throat was slit using a sharp weapon, and excessive blood loss may have caused the death. However, it is still unclear whether the crime was premeditated or if there were other motives involved.
Ramani Roy was a resident of Pradhanpara area under Barogharia Gram Panchayat. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters-in-law. Locals said that he used to participate in kirtans and religious events across different areas.
Sources also indicated that Roy had received a significant amount of money as compensation after the government acquired land in the area for a four-lane road project. This has raised speculation about whether financial motives could be linked to the incident.
Local panchayat member Gouri Roy Adhikari stated that if it had been a train accident, the body would have been severed, suggesting that it appears to be a planned murder. The victim’s nephew, Tapas Roy, also ruled out suicide, claiming that his uncle had been murdered and had not returned home on Monday night. His son, Chiranjit Roy, said that the condition of the body did not indicate a train accident, as there was only a cut mark on the throat.
The police are currently investigating all possible angles to determine the exact cause of death and identify those responsible.
