President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated on Saturday evening after an armed individual opened fire near the security checkpoint of the annual White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel.

Following the incident, which occurred shortly after 8:40 p.m. ET, the President addressed the nation from the White House, emphasizing that while such attacks on the American republic are not unprecedented, the country must remain resolute in resolving political differences peacefully .

During his press briefing, President Trump commended the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement for their rapid response, which prevented further casualties . Security personnel confronted the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, near the event’s magnetometer screening area.

Despite the suspect firing at least one shot—striking an agent whose protective gear prevented serious injury—law enforcement officers successfully apprehended the individual .

President Trump characterized the attack as an assault on the fundamental purpose of the dinner, which is intended to foster dialogue and celebrate freedom of expression .

Expressing concerns over current security protocols, the President stated, This event was dedicated to the freedom of speech, aimed at bringing together members of both parties and the press. In response to the violence, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued a statement expressing great relief that the President, the First Lady, and all attendees were safe, while condemning the terrifying act of violence.

The suspect, Cole Allen, remains in custody and is expected to face federal charges related to the attack on a law enforcement officer . President Trump concluded by urging all Americans to commit to resolving national divisions through peaceful and civil discourse.
