New Delhi, 22 April (H.S.): The National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (NITDRD) has earned 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification from the central government under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, pioneering sustainable waste management in India's healthcare sector.
Spanning 27 acres and generating 1-1.2 tons of waste daily—including 500-650 kg wet refuse—NITDRD implemented source segregation, recycling, and composting via the Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation's Swachh Sankalp, backed by South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Initiated through waste audits and baseline surveys, the initiative featured 50 staff awareness sessions, a Wet Waste Composting Centre, Dry Waste Resource Centre, horticulture shredders, 40 GOBARdhan composting bins, and dedicated monitoring—ensuring full diversion under 2026 Solid Waste Rules for bulk generators.
Mehroli ward's 40 Aerobin units inauguration formalized this benchmark, inspiring healthcare's green evolution.
