
Chandigarh, 21 April (H.S.): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday reached out to renowned Dutch hockey legend Floris Jan Bovelander, inviting him to contribute his expertise toward strengthening hockey in the state, especially in the lead-up to the prestigious Asian Champions Trophy.
During a detailed meeting, the Chief Minister discussed the broader sports ecosystem in Punjab, with a special focus on reviving the glory of hockey, India’s national game. Mann praised Bovelander for his exceptional skills and immense contribution to the sport, noting that his journey continues to inspire young athletes worldwide.
Inviting the Olympian to Punjab, Mann emphasized that the state is keen to facilitate his interaction with players to enhance their skills and exposure. He highlighted that Punjab is set to host the Hockey Asian Champions Trophy for the first time in its history, calling it a landmark moment for the state’s sporting landscape.
The Chief Minister also underlined the importance of upcoming international events, stating that following the conclusion of the Asian Games in early October, the top six teams will compete in the Champions Trophy. He added that the approval of a four-nation invitational tournament would further strengthen Punjab’s emergence as a global hub for hockey.
Reiterating Punjab’s deep-rooted connection with the sport, Mann said hockey and Punjab are inseparable. He pointed out that more than 50 players from the state have won Olympic medals, while 10 Punjabi players have captained India in Olympic hockey.
Highlighting the state’s rich legacy, Mann mentioned villages like Sansarpur, Khusropur and Mithapur, which have collectively produced over 20 Olympians. He also recalled recent achievements, including India’s bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after a gap of 41 years, where nine Punjabi players were part of the squad led by Manpreet Singh.
