
Goalpara (Assam), 14 April (HS): A tragic incident cast a shadow over the celebrations of Rongali Bihu as two minor twin brothers drowned in the Krishnai River in Assam’s Goalpara district on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the Bhojmala area of Krishnai when the brothers had gone to bathe their cattle in the river as part of the traditional Goru Bihu rituals. The deceased have been identified as Dipankar Nath and Debashish Nath, both Class 9 students and residents of Tengabari village.
According to eyewitnesses, the two brothers accidentally ventured into deeper waters while bathing the cattle and went missing after drowning. Panic gripped the area as locals immediately launched a search operation, but initial efforts failed to trace them.
Upon receiving information, police and a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation. After prolonged efforts, the bodies of both brothers were recovered from the river.
The heartbreaking incident has left the entire locality in mourning. A day symbolizing joy and cultural festivity turned into one of grief for the bereaved family and the community. Police have taken custody of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.-----------
