Hooghly, 12 April (H.S.): In a noteworthy development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the political landscape in Khanakul has taken a fresh turn with former Trinamool Congress (TMC) student leader Alok Dhawa joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Dhawa was formally inducted into the BJP on Saturday night at the party’s Khanakul office, in the presence of BJP candidate Sushanta Ghosh, who welcomed him by handing over the party flag.
Sources indicate that Dhawa’s decision comes after prolonged dissatisfaction with the TMC leadership, despite his long-standing association with the party’s student wing. Announcing his switch, Dhawa said he aims to contribute to the region’s development and bring a “new political direction” to Khanakul.
Reacting to the development, BJP candidate Sushanta Ghosh described the move as a boost for the party ahead of the polls. “The inclusion of a young and active leader like Alok Dhawa will strengthen our grassroots organization,” he said, adding that such shifts reflect a broader desire for change among both voters and political workers.
Political analysts view the defection as potentially significant in shaping the electoral dynamics of the constituency. Dhawa’s transition from being an active face in TMC’s student politics to joining the BJP is being interpreted as an indicator of shifting loyalties at the local level.
