Kolkata, 07 March (H.S.): Droupadi Murmu on Saturday expressed displeasure over the administrative arrangements and protocol during her visit to North Bengal, indirectly raising questions over the functioning of the West Bengal government while addressing the ninth International Santal Conference in Siliguri.

Speaking from the stage, the President said that several obstacles were created during the organisation of the conference, which caused considerable difficulties for the organisers. She arrived at Bagdogra Airport earlier in the day and went directly to the programme venue at Gosaiipur before attending the main conference held at Bidhannagar.

During her address, Murmu noted that despite adequate space being available in Bidhannagar, permission to hold the conference there was initially denied citing security concerns. As a result, the organisers were forced to change the venue four times, a situation she indicated was not appropriate for such a major cultural and social event.

In an emotional remark, the President referred to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a sister and said she herself considers herself a daughter of Bengal. However, she added that it was unfortunate that such administrative hurdles were created despite that relationship. Murmu emphasised that events celebrating the culture and heritage of indigenous communities should receive support and encouragement.

The President also expressed mild dissatisfaction with the arrangements at the conference venue. She observed that several members of the Santal community were seen moving outside the conference hall and appeared to have been prevented from entering. Murmu said that in such a large international gathering, the participation of all members of the Santal community should be ensured.

During her speech, she also recalled the proud tradition of bravery within the Santal community. Referring to the historic resistance led by Tilka Manjhi nearly 240 years ago against oppression, she said the community has a legacy of standing firmly against injustice.

Murmu said the Santals are a courageous community that has never accepted injustice and has always fought against oppression, adding that they should take pride in their glorious history.

The President also raised the issue of official protocol. She pointed out that as per convention, the Chief Minister or a senior cabinet minister of the state government is expected to be present at the airport to receive the President. However, at Bagdogra Airport, neither the Chief Minister nor any senior minister was present, and only Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb was there to receive her.

Following the President’s remarks, discussions have intensified in political circles regarding the state government’s arrangements and the coordination between the Centre and the state. Despite the controversy, a large number of people from the tribal community attended the conference, and Murmu’s presence generated considerable enthusiasm among them.
