Bhubaneswar, 05 March (H.S.): Sampad Chandra Swain, Odisha’s Minister for Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education and MLA from Paradip, has proposed the establishment of a modern hygienic fish market in the constituency to improve facilities for fishermen, traders and consumers.

In a letter to Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik, Swain requested immediate intervention and allocation of funds for the project.

Paradip, located along the coast of the Bay of Bengal and surrounded by several rivers, has abundant availability of marine fish. A large section of the local population depends on fishing and fish trade for their livelihood, while fish also forms an important part of the daily diet of residents.

However, the existing fish markets in the area are reportedly in poor condition, lacking proper sanitation and basic infrastructure. The absence of adequate storage facilities often leads to deterioration in the quality of fish, creating difficulties for both traders and consumers.

The proposed modern fish market will include improved sanitation systems, ice-based preservation facilities, upgraded infrastructure and cold storage units. The initiative is expected to ensure better hygiene standards, maintain the freshness and quality of fish, and reduce environmental pollution.

If implemented, the project is likely to significantly improve the fish trade in the Paradip region, benefiting both vendors and consumers by providing access to safer and higher-quality seafood. Residents of the area have long demanded such a facility.
