Hooghly, 31 March (H.S.): A political row erupted in West Bengal after the All India Trinamool Congress accused the Hooghly district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party of sexually harassing a woman, a charge strongly denied by the BJP leader.
In a post on micro blogging site X on Tuesday , the TMC alleged that the BJP leader had harassed the wife of a party worker and, when she resisted, attempted to implicate her husband in a false financial case. The ruling party termed the incident an abuse of power and questioned the BJP’s claims on women’s safety.
Responding to the allegations, the BJP district president rejected the charges and described them as politically motivated. He claimed that on March 30, he had asked the concerned individual to return money, but the amount was not repaid, following which the allegation surfaced.
“I have all the evidence. Let there be an investigation, the truth will come out. TMC leaders are trying to malign my image,” he said.
The BJP leader also asserted that he has been in public life for a long time and that people in the area are aware of his character.
The allegations and counterclaims have triggered a war of words between the two parties.
