Hooghly, 30 March (H.S.): The Indian National Congress is facing significant dissent in the Champdani Assembly constituency over its choice of candidate, raising concerns about its prospects in a seat once considered a party stronghold.
The selection of Pritam Ghosh as the party’s nominee has triggered resentment among grassroots workers and supporters, who allege that the decision was influenced by internal lobbying. They claim that Satyam Singh, a popular youth leader and Hooghly district Youth Congress president, was overlooked despite his strong organisational presence.
Party insiders said Singh has been actively involved in strengthening the organisation, raising public issues before the administration, and engaging with people at the grassroots level. His supporters also highlighted his relief work during the COVID-19 pandemic and assistance to flood-affected areas as key factors behind his popularity.
The discontent in Champdani is being seen as a matter of concern for the party, especially given its historical dominance in the constituency. Several workers have reportedly warned that they may withdraw support if the leadership does not reconsider the decision.
Similar grievances have also emerged from Uttarpara, where allegations of favouritism in ticket distribution have surfaced.
Party sources said there is growing demand for a review of the candidate selection process to ensure that a more acceptable and grassroots-connected leader is fielded, in a bid to retain the party’s base and credibility in the region.
