Chennai, 30 March (H.S):
The nomination process for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections officially commenced on Monday, setting the stage for the next crucial phase of the electoral process. With the Model Code of Conduct already in force, election authorities have intensified preparations to ensure a smooth and transparent filing procedure across all constituencies.
Officials have rolled out a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at maintaining order and preventing disruptions during the nomination period. Strict protocols have been introduced at all filing centres, with authorities closely monitoring compliance to uphold the integrity of the process.
Candidates filing their nominations must adhere to clearly defined restrictions. Only three vehicles will be allowed to accompany a candidate, and these must be parked at least 100 metres away from the Returning Officer’s office. Additionally, entry into the nomination venue is limited to the candidate and a maximum of three authorised individuals.
Authorities have cautioned that any violation of these norms could lead to action, including denial of entry or delays in filing. Security arrangements have also been strengthened to manage crowd control and ensure the process remains orderly.
Although the nomination window spans eight days, only four working days are available due to intervening public holidays. Candidates have been urged to complete the process well in advance to avoid last-minute complications.
In a bid to streamline the process, the Election Commission has enabled online submission of nomination forms. However, candidates must still submit signed physical copies in person within the prescribed deadline.
Candidates are also required to ensure accuracy in their application forms, as errors may result in rejection during scrutiny. Each candidate must attach a recent photograph, taken within the last three months, which will be displayed on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The final date for filing nominations is April 6, with scrutiny scheduled for April 7 and withdrawal permitted until April 9. Polling will be held on April 23, and results will be declared on May 4. Election authorities have assured that all arrangements are in place for a seamless nomination process.
