Guwahati, 30 March (HS): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Monday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that only one family in the state had seen massive financial growth over the past five years. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Shrinate questioned how assets could increase by 600–700% in such a short span and demanded that the “formula” be shared with the people of Assam.

She claimed that asset declarations submitted to the Election Commission show a significant rise in the Chief Minister’s family wealth, particularly that of his spouse. Comparing figures from previous affidavits, Shrinate alleged that while the Chief Minister’s assets saw moderate growth, his family’s overall wealth witnessed an extraordinary jump, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

Shrinate also criticized the state government’s policies, alleging that several sectors including real estate, transport, media, mining and hospitality were dominated by entities linked to the Chief Minister’s family. She questioned whether similar growth had been witnessed in Assam’s overall economy, asking why ordinary citizens had not benefited in the same way.

Referring to unemployment and economic challenges, she stated that a large number of youths from Assam are migrating to other states in search of jobs, while the state continues to face financial strain. She further alleged that Assam’s debt burden has increased significantly, with liabilities impacting citizens across age groups.

On law and order, Shrinate accused the government of a “lenient approach,” claiming that it had led to controversial developments, including court directions related to individuals accused in the killing of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. She asserted that justice must be ensured and criticized the government’s handling of the case.

Highlighting Congress’s political stance, Shrinate said the party does not merely make promises but is committed to fulfilling its “five guarantees” for the people of Assam. These include financial assistance for women, support for small businesses and enhanced welfare measures for the elderly.

She also rejected allegations that Congress represents only a particular community, asserting that the party stands for all sections of society across Assam. The Congress leader emphasized that her party would continue to raise issues of public concern and maintain a “truth-based” campaign approach, in contrast to what she described as misinformation by political opponents.

Other Congress leaders, including Mahima Singh, Bedabrata Bora, and Gopal Sharma were also present at the press conference.-----------
