Mumbai/New Delhi, 29 March (H.S.): Dr. Vijaypat Singhania, former Chairman of the Raymond Group, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday evening at the age of 87, his family said.

His son Gautam Singhania, the current Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, announced the demise on social media platform X. The last rites are scheduled to be performed on Sunday.

A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Singhania was widely recognised for his contribution to India’s textile industry and his role in building Raymond into a globally known brand. He led the Raymond Group for nearly two decades until 2000.

After stepping down as chairman, he handed over the leadership of the company to Gautam Singhania and also transferred his entire 37 per cent stake in the company to him.

Apart from his industrial achievements, Singhania was also known for his passion for aviation. He held a world record for achieving the highest altitude in a hot air balloon. In recognition of his interest in aviation, the Indian Air Force conferred on him the honorary rank of Air Commodore in 1994. He also served as the Sheriff of Mumbai in 2006.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over his demise, stating that Singhania’s contribution to industry, entrepreneurship and philanthropy would continue to inspire future generations.

In a message posted on social media, Fadnavis said the Raymond tagline “The Complete Man” reflected the values of quality, excellence and innovation associated with Singhania’s leadership.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also paid tribute, describing Singhania’s demise as the end of an era. He said the industrialist built a globally respected brand and left behind a legacy of excellence and social commitment.

Leaders and members of the business community recalled Singhania’s contributions to Indian industry and said his life and work would continue to inspire future generations.
