Sonitpur (Assam), 29 March (HS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday intensified his attack on the Congress, alleging that the party’s policies historically promoted illegal infiltration in Assam and that it is now opposing corrective measures taken by the Centre.

Addressing a public rally in Sonitpur on the second day of his two-day Assam visit, Shah claimed that the Congress government had enacted the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act (IMDT) with the intent of encouraging infiltration in the state. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to identifying and deporting illegal migrants, asserting that the issue remains a top priority for the government.

Referring to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise across the country, Shah accused the Congress leadership of opposing the process. He said such opposition raises serious questions about the party’s stance on illegal infiltration.

Targeting Assam Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, Shah challenged him to clarify his position before the people of the state. He questioned why Gogoi was opposing the SIR exercise and asked whether he stands with infiltrators or against them.

Notably, Shah began his Assam tour with a massive roadshow in Guwahati on Saturday evening, drawing large crowds. He is scheduled to participate in further campaign programmes, including in Nalbari, later on Sunday.------------
