Guwahati, 28 March (HS): Assam BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of political hypocrisy over its alliance with the CPI(M) in Assam despite opposing Marxist forces in Kerala.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, in the presence of spokesperson Manas Sarania, Sarmah said that senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have repeatedly described Communist forces as a major threat to the nation, particularly citing governance issues in Kerala. However, he alleged that the Congress’ decision to align with the CPI(M) in Assam reflects a “glaring contradiction” in its political stance.

Sarmah questioned how a party portrayed as an adversary in Kerala could become a trusted ally in Assam, asserting that the Congress owes an explanation to the people. He said this development highlights what he termed as the party’s consistent attempts to mislead citizens.

The BJP leader further claimed that the Congress has already conceded defeat in the Assam Assembly elections, citing what he described as a lack of seriousness from its central leadership. He pointed out that after releasing its first list of candidates on March 3, the party remained largely inactive on Assam-related issues on social media until March 27, while continuing to focus on Kerala.

Sarmah also alleged that the Congress is facing political decline in the state and has been reduced to contesting primarily in a limited number of minority-dominated constituencies. He claimed that the party lacks organisational strength in regions dominated by indigenous communities.

Concluding his remarks, Sarmah said that the people of Assam have already rejected the Congress politically and the party is now grappling with diminishing relevance in the state’s political landscape.----------
