Thiruvananthapuram, 27 March (H.S.):After days of intense heat and rising discomfort, Kerala is set to receive much-needed relief as summer showers are expected to begin from today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast indicates that isolated parts of the state are likely to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD has also warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in certain regions, which could intensify weather-related risks. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly during periods of lightning activity, which can be hazardous.
Despite the anticipated rainfall, the state continues to remain under a high-temperature alert. A yellow alert has been issued in 12 districts, with temperatures expected to remain significantly above normal levels. Kollam, Kottayam, and Palakkad districts are likely to record maximum temperatures of up to 38°C. Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur may see temperatures rising to around 37°C.
In Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts, the mercury is expected to touch up to 36°C. The IMD has noted that temperatures across the state could remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages, prolonging heatwave-like conditions.
Authorities have cautioned that the combination of high temperatures and humid conditions may lead to hot and uncomfortable weather, especially in lowland areas, excluding hilly regions where conditions may be relatively moderate.
People are urged to take necessary precautions against heat exposure and to remain alert during thunderstorms. Officials emphasize that lightning poses a serious risk, and safety measures should be strictly followed during adverse weather conditions.
