Shillong, 27 March (HS): Meghalay CM Conrad K Sangma on Friday welcomed the Centre’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel, calling it a crucial step to ease the burden on citizens and businesses amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India, Sangma said the ₹10 per litre reduction for domestic consumption would bring immediate financial relief across the country. He shared his response while amplifying an official announcement made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
In his statement, Sangma noted that the move comes at a critical time when global uncertainties are driving up fuel prices, adding that such timely intervention reflects the Centre’s commitment to safeguarding public interest.
Detailing the decision, Sitharaman stated that the excise duty cut applies specifically to petrol and diesel meant for domestic use, aimed at cushioning consumers from price volatility triggered by geopolitical tensions. She reiterated that the government remains focused on protecting citizens from fluctuations in essential commodity costs.
Alongside the tax reduction, the Centre has introduced export duties on key fuels to stabilise domestic supply. Diesel exports will attract a duty of ₹21.5 per litre, while aviation turbine fuel (ATF) will be subject to ₹29.5 per litre. The measures have been formally notified to Parliament.
Experts believe the excise cut could help moderate inflationary trends, with fuel prices at retail outlets expected to decline correspondingly, subject to variations in state-level taxes.-----------
