Kolkata, 26 March (H.S.) : Addressing a press conference at the Salt Lake BJP office on Thursday, West Bengal BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya expressed deep concern over the state’s ongoing agricultural crisis, law and order situation, and issues surrounding voter list revisions ahead of the upcoming elections.
Bhattacharya highlighted the distress faced by farmers across multiple districts, citing recent suicides among potato cultivators. He attributed the crisis to mounting debt, natural calamities, and market distortions that prevent farmers from receiving fair prices for their produce. He accused the state government of failing to provide adequate support and shifting responsibility onto others, pointing to inconsistencies and poor planning in agricultural policies.
He also raised concerns about environmental degradation caused by illegal sand mining and other ecological issues in regions including North Bengal, warning that agricultural productivity is declining as a result.
On law and order, Bhattacharya noted a rise in political violence and internal conflicts within the ruling party, some resulting in fatalities. He urged the Election Commission to ensure the safety of all citizens during the electoral process. The BJP leader also condemned restrictions imposed on religious processions, citing the recent obstruction of the Ram Navami rally as an example of threats to religious freedom that foster societal divisions.
Regarding voter list updates, Bhattacharya stressed the need for a transparent and error-free electoral roll. He alleged that submission of Form-7 had been obstructed in many cases, and forms that were submitted were not properly processed. He called on the Election Commission to address all complaints thoroughly and ensure clarity in the revision process, while noting that individuals whose names were removed could reapply using Form-6.
Concluding the press conference, Bhattacharya asserted that the people of West Bengal are aware of the current situation and that it will be reflected in the upcoming elections.
