Kolkata, 26 March (H.S.) : Violent clashes broke out in Basanti on Thursday during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) campaign, leaving eight police personnel injured. The unrest reportedly began when alleged Trinamool Congress-backed miscreants attacked BJP supporters during the campaign of candidate Bikash Sardar.

According to police sources, officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the attack. Tensions escalated when BJP workers insisted on continuing their campaign, despite warnings about potential disorder. This led to confrontations between BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters, with both sides reportedly resorting to throwing bricks and using sticks.

In the melee, eight police personnel sustained injuries while attempting to control the situation. The BJP candidate, Bikash Sardar, reportedly took refuge at the Bharat Sevashram Ashram to avoid further conflict.

Trinamool Congress leaders denied any involvement in the violence, claiming that public anger was directed against the BJP. The incident highlights the growing tensions in the region as political parties intensify campaigning ahead of the Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
