Murshidabad, 25 March (H.S.): The Election Commission of India has taken disciplinary action against seven paramilitary personnel deployed on poll duty in Murshidabad for allegedly attending a social event in violation of rules.
According to sources, the incident took place about a week ago in the Nimtita area during the month of Ramadan, where the personnel were reportedly seen attending an Iftar gathering. The event was allegedly hosted by Samiul Haque, husband of a local panchayat head. Photographs from the gathering later went viral on social media, drawing the attention of the poll panel.
The personnel, however, claimed that they did not attend any external event and that the Iftar was organised within the BSF camp, with local representatives invited. Despite this, the Commission initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter.
The Election Commission stated that paramilitary personnel deployed for election duty are not allowed to accept any form of hospitality from locals or participate in social functions. Terming it a violation of protocol, action was taken under paramilitary rules.
As part of the action, two personnel have been placed under custody of the central forces, while five others have reportedly been moved out of the state.
Notably, central forces have been deployed in West Bengal well ahead of the elections, and their activities are being closely monitored using GPS trackers and body cameras to ensure strict adherence to guidelines.
