Asansol, 25 March (H.S.): In a major anti-narcotics operation, police arrested three persons from the Girja More area under Asansol South Police Station limits and recovered approximately 34 grams of brown sugar along with ₹1.5 lakh in cash from their possession.

According to police sources, the operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs. Officials from the Narcotics Department were also present during the raid. Acting on suspicion, police intercepted a toto (battery-operated rickshaw) and conducted a search of the three occupants.

During the search, the contraband substance and cash were recovered, following which all three accused were arrested on the spot.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the accused are residents of the Railpar area. During questioning, the toto driver told investigators that he was on his way to drop one of the accused, identified as MD Nawab, a resident of Alam Nagar in the Railpar locality.

The driver reportedly stated that Nawab had requested the ride citing health issues and asked to be taken to Alam Nagar. However, acting on prior information, the Narcotics team and local police conducted the operation and apprehended the suspects red-handed.

Police have initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the source of the narcotics and whether a larger drug trafficking network is involved.
