New Delhi, 24 March (H.S.): The Supreme Court questioned Monday why West Bengal encounters disproportionate hurdles in the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists when other states completed the process smoothly despite deleting more names a bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant deferred further hearing to April 1.
During arguments Trinamool Congress counsel sought extension of finalisation deadlines citing pending claims with senior advocate Shyam Diwan noting April 6 and 9 nomination cutoffs after which voter list changes become impossible prompting the CJI to highlight seamless execution elsewhere despite larger deletions.
Advocate Kalyan Banerjee attributed Bengals issues to Election Commission strictness recalling the courts March 10 directive safeguarding judicial officers work barring administrative appeals and mandating appeals to a Calcutta High Court bench of two former or current judges constituted by the Chief Justice with EC required to notify the mechanism.
Petitioners challenged names struck off during SIR despite prior listings and voting history with documents rejected earlier court clarifying no appeals against judicial decisions in current circumstances underscoring procedural disparities across states.
