New Delhi, 23 March (H.S.):
India cricket head coach and ex-MP Gautam Gambhir on Monday withdrew his Delhi High Court plea seeking ironclad protection for his personality and publicity rights his counsel Jai Anant Dehadrai told Justice Jyoti Singhs bench which greenlit the pullback without a hitch.
The court had just days ago on March 20 nudged Gambhir to sharpen his filing amid claims of rampant unauthorized deepfake and AI abuse peddling bogus content like fake resignation videos or him bashing players. Dehadrai had raged that misleading stuff floods platforms sans permission while e-commerce sites hawk his name image and voice for profit.
Gambhirs suit hit 16 defendants demanding Rs 2.5 crore damages and takedowns for ripping off his identity through AI deepfakes fabricated clips and merch scams invoking Copyright Act Trade Marks Act and Commercial Courts Act. It echoed HC precedents shielding Baba Ramdev Kajol Vivek Oberoi Pawan Kalyan Sunil Gavaskar Salman Khan Ajay Devgn Jaya Bachchan Sudhir Chaudhary Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Nagarjuna Aishwarya Rai Abhishek Bachchan and Karan Johar from similar image grabs.
The surprise retreat caps a whirlwind bid launched last week on this charged Budget Session day leaving questions swirling over the deepfake defenses front.
