New Delhi, 20 March (H.S.): The Central Government informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it has formed a three-member expert committee to rewrite the judiciary-related chapter in an NCERT textbook, prompting the apex court to dispose of its suo motu proceedings.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta disclosed the panel comprises former Supreme Court judges Justice Indu Malhotra and Justice Aniruddha Bose, alongside ex-Attorney General KK Venugopal. This follows the court's March 11 directive removing Professors Michel Danino, Divakar, and Alok Prasanna Kumar—responsible for the Class 8 chapter on judicial corruption—from government duties, criticizing their intent to foster a negative judicial image among impressionable students.
On February 26, the Supreme Court banned distribution of the book, deeming it a deliberate attempt to malign the judiciary and contemptuous if shared online or physically.
