Bareilly, 17

March (HS): A man accused of stabbing his wife and murdering his mother-in-law

and brother-in-law during a panchayat meet in Bareilly was slain in an

encounter with police on Tuesday, according to authorities. According to police,

Afsar Khan (40), and Saima (28), had been married for nine years and had two

children. A woman arrived to her mother's house around five days ago after a

family conflict.

On Monday,

a panchayat meeting was called to address the situation. During the meeting,

Afsar Khan, an ambulance driver by trade, stabbed and killed his mother-in-law,

Asma (54), and brother-in-law, Adil. He also assaulted and harmed his wife when

she tried to intercede. While her mother and brother perished, Saima was taken

to a private hospital and is still in serious condition, according to reports.

Senior

Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anurag Arya stated that when the killings

occurred at the panchayat meeting, police began a manhunt for the perpetrators.

On Tuesday morning, the police got information that Afsar was present at the

Sahara Ground in Mudiya Ahmadnagar, armed with an illegal weapon, and that he

intended to proceed to the hospital to murder his wife. Police repeatedly

ordered him to surrender, but he opened fire on them. The police replied and

fired in self-defense, leaving Afsar critically injured. He was immediately

taken to the district hospital, where medics pronounced him dead, according to the

SSP.

Two cops,

constables Rupendra and Anurag, were also injured during the exchange of fire

and are presently being treated at the district hospital, he said. According to

the SSP, police discovered a firearm, ammo, and a knife from the accused's

possession. According to police sources, Afsar had a lengthy criminal record. In

2009, Afsar killed his maternal uncle. This case was filed with the Bithri

Chainpur police station. He was imprisoned and given a life sentence. After

obtaining bail from the court, he returned to his village. However, his

attitude did not change after being released from prison, according to police

sources. According to authorities, he has also been charged with theft, and an

investigation is ongoing.
