Thiruvananthapuram, 15 March (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds in parts of northern Kerala in the coming hours. According to the latest weather advisory, districts including Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod are likely to receive light rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places. Winds may reach speeds of up to 40 km per hour during the weather activity.
The IMD further said that similar conditions could persist over the next two days, with isolated places across the region likely to experience thunderstorms and light rainfall accompanied by lightning.
Meanwhile, coastal regions of Kerala have been placed on alert due to the possibility of sea incursions triggered by the “Kallakkadal” phenomenon, a condition associated with sudden high waves along the shoreline.
The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned that wave heights ranging between 0.4 metres and 1.0 metre may occur along several stretches of the Kerala coast until 11.30 p.m. tomorrow. These waves could lead to sea surges and localized coastal flooding.
The alert covers multiple coastal belts, including Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (Alappad to Edava), Alappuzha (Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty), Ernakulam (Munambam Fishing Harbour to Maruvakkad), Thrissur (Aattupuram to Kodungallur), Malappuram (Kadalundi Nagaram to Palappetty), Kozhikode (Chombala to Ramanattukara), Kannur (Valapattanam to New Mahe), and Kasaragod (Kunjathur to Kottakunnu).
In addition, the Tamil Nadu coast at Kanyakumari may experience higher waves between 1.2 metres and 1.3 metres until 8.30 p.m. tomorrow, the ocean research agency said.
Authorities have advised fishermen and residents living along coastal areas to remain vigilant, avoid venturing too close to the sea during high-wave conditions, and follow safety advisories issued by local administrations. Officials also urged the public to stay alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity to prevent accidents.
