New Delhi, 15 March (H.S.): Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting posthumous conferment of the Bharat Ratna on Bahujan Samaj pioneer Kanshi Ram on his birth anniversary.

Gandhi hailed Kanshi Ram's transformative role in reshaping Indian politics by awakening political consciousness among Bahujans and the poor through grassroots movements, strengthening democracy's foundations for greater representation and equity.

He emphasized that Kanshi Ram dedicated his life to actualizing constitutional guarantees of equality, dignity, and participation for society's most marginalized, reminding citizens their vote holds power in a shared nation; this honor would recognize his legacy and aspirations of millions viewing him as empowerment icon.

Dalit intellectuals, leaders, and activists have long championed this award.
