Howrah, 12 March (H.S.): The body of a 55-year-old woman was found stuffed inside a sack near a canal in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Thursday, triggering sensation in the area, the police said.

The deceased was identified as Sushama De, a resident of Marghurali Derepara in Jagatballavpur police station area.

According to local residents, a large sack was seen lying beside a roadside canal around 11.30 am. Though sacks are often found in the area, some locals grew suspicious after noticing flies hovering over it and alerted the police.

The police reached the spot and recovered the body of the woman after opening the sack. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, an officer said.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the body had been dumped near the canal after the murder, possibly following a family dispute, the police said.

Neighbours alleged that the woman had been having frequent disputes with her son and daughter-in-law. They also claimed that the sack in which the body was found was usually used by the son to cover his car.

Police sources said the woman’s son had lodged a missing diary at the Jagatballavpur police station earlier in the day. However, the body was recovered about 100 metres away from the house shortly afterwards, deepening suspicion.

The son and daughter-in-law have been detained and are being questioned in connection with the incident, the police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
