Hooghly, 12 March (H.S.): The police carried out a late-night checking drive in West Bengal’s Hooghly district as part of preparations for the upcoming elections, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was conducted at Shankhanagar More under the Mogra police station area by Hooghly Rural Police. Deputy Superintendent of Police Abhijit Sinha Mahapatra, Mogra police station in-charge Soumen Biswas and other officers led the drive.

During the operation, police stopped and searched several vehicles. Action was taken against motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol and those not wearing seat belts. A total of seven persons were fined during the checking drive, police said.

In a separate incident, a civic volunteer on duty at Nimtala More under the same police station returned a lost purse to a woman.

According to police, the woman, identified as Sagari Karmakar of Palwar, had come to Mogra with her son when she accidentally lost her purse and began searching for it.

An unidentified person reportedly found the purse and handed it over to the civic volunteer on duty, who later returned it to the woman.
