Cooch Behar, 12 March (H.S.): A nurse of a government hospital died of burn injuries following a suspected domestic dispute in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, while her husband sustained serious burns and was hospitalised, the police said on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Chhanda Roy (35), who worked as a nurse at the MJM Medical College and Hospital in Cooch Behar.

According to the police and local sources, Roy was living in a rented house in the Buxibari area of Cooch Behar town. Her husband, Ranjit Roy, works as a driver in Siliguri and used to visit her occasionally. The couple has a daughter who studies at a school in Kalimpong.

The police said the couple had reportedly been facing marital disputes in recent months and the matter had earlier reached the police station, though no formal complaint was lodged.

Locals said Chhanda Roy had returned home from the hospital on Wednesday evening. Her husband arrived later and an argument allegedly broke out between them at night.

A woman who was visiting a nearby house claimed she saw a man running out of the house with his body on fire and removing his clothes while fleeing.

Roy was later found lying with severe burn injuries near the gate of the house and could not be saved, police said. Her husband, who also suffered serious burns, was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and started an investigation into the incident. Authorities said all possible angles, including a domestic dispute, are being probed.
