Nadia, 11 March (H.S.): An Afghan national was arrested while allegedly attempting to cross the Indo-Bangladesh international border illegally in West Bengal’s Nadia district, officials said on Wednesday.
A senior Border Security Force (BSF) officer said the accused has been identified as Aljahi Musafar, a resident of Nimroz province in Afghanistan.
He was apprehended during a routine patrol late at night from the Fatepur border area in Nadia district. Officials said he did not possess any valid documents for entering India and no Bangladeshi identity documents were recovered from him.
After preliminary questioning, the man was handed over to the West Bengal Police.
A court in Ranaghat in Nadia district on Tuesday remanded the accused to police custody. He is currently in the custody of Hanskhali police station, officials said.
The police said the accused could not clearly explain the purpose of his presence in the border area or who had assisted him in attempting to cross the international border.
Investigators are also trying to ascertain how he had earlier reached Bangladesh and from where he attempted to enter India, the police added.
