Kolkata, 11 March (H.S.) : An Afghan national was arrested in West Bengal’s Nadia district while allegedly attempting to cross the India–Bangladesh international border illegally, prompting heightened alertness among security agencies and a detailed investigation into the incident.
According to officials from the Border Security Force (BSF), the accused has been identified as Aljahi Musafar, a resident of Nimroz province in Afghanistan. He was apprehended late at night during a routine patrol near the Fatepur border area in Nadia district.
Officials said BSF personnel intercepted him after noticing suspicious movement. During questioning, he failed to produce any valid documents related to his entry into India. No Bangladeshi identification documents were found in his possession either.
After preliminary interrogation, the BSF handed him over to the West Bengal Police for further investigation. He is currently in police custody at Hanskhali Police Station in Nadia district.
Police said the accused could not provide satisfactory answers regarding the purpose of his presence in the border area or whether he had received assistance in crossing the international boundary. Investigators are also trying to ascertain the route he might have taken to reach Bangladesh before attempting to enter India.
On Tuesday, a court in Ranaghat remanded him to police custody. Security agencies are treating the matter seriously and are examining all possible angles, including his travel route and possible local links.
