Kolkata, 04 February (H.S.): A court in Kolkata has granted bail to a waiter of the iconic Park Street restaurant Olypub, who was arrested for allegedly serving beef steak instead of mutton to a content creator.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate granted bail to Sheikh Nasimuddin, who had been arrested on charges of hurting religious sentiments. After his arrest on Saturday, Nasimuddin was remanded to judicial custody and was produced before the court through virtual mode on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Nasimuddin’s counsel sought bail, arguing that there had been no new developments in the investigation, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court allowed the bail application.

According to sources, Nasimuddin’s family hails from Odisha and has been associated with Olypub for two generations.

The controversy erupted after content creator Sayak Chakraborty posted a video alleging that he and two of his friends were served beef steak at Olypub despite ordering mutton steak. The video triggered widespread outrage and debate.

In a statement, Olypub termed the incident a “genuine and unintentional mistake,” stating that there was no intention to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments.

“On the evening of January 30, 2026, one of our waiters committed a serious but unintentional error while serving. We deeply regret the mistake and sincerely apologise for inadvertently hurting our customers’ sentiments,” the restaurant said.

The management further stated that Olypub is built on a foundation of respect for all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender, and reaffirmed its commitment to treating all patrons and staff with dignity, highlighting its 80-year legacy.
