Thiruvananthapuram , 25 Feb (H.S.): Kerala has once again set a powerful example in deceased organ donation, as the family of a 37-year-old road accident victim from Kilimanoor consented to donate five of his organs, offering hope and life to multiple patients awaiting transplants.

Jijin, a native of Kilimanoor and a clerk with the Chadayamangalam Block Panchayat, sustained critical injuries in a road accident late Sunday night near Thottakkad, close to Kallambalam. According to reports, the motorcycle he was riding crashed into the rear of a car around midnight. He suffered severe head injuries in the collision and was rushed to a nearby hospital before being shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Despite intensive medical efforts, doctors confirmed Jijin’s brain death at the Medical College Hospital. Following detailed counselling by the medical team and transplant coordinators, his family made the courageous decision to donate his organs.

Five organs — the liver, heart, kidneys, pancreas, and corneas — are set to be harvested for transplantation. Authorities have already identified recipients for one kidney and the corneas. The allocation of the remaining organs is being coordinated through the State’s organ-sharing network, ‘Mrithasanjeevani,’ which facilitates transparent and equitable distribution of donated organs to patients on the waiting list.

Health officials said the timely decision by Jijin’s family could potentially save or significantly improve the lives of several individuals suffering from end-stage organ failure. The organ retrieval and transplantation procedures are being carried out in accordance with established medical protocols.

Kerala has consistently been recognised for its strong organ donation awareness programmes and the effective functioning of its deceased donor transplant system. Medical experts note that such acts of generosity not only provide life-saving treatment to recipients but also inspire greater public awareness about the importance of organ donation.

Jijin’s final act of giving, even in death, stands as a testament to compassion and social responsibility — a reminder that one family’s courage can light up many lives.
