Heavy rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 24 Feb (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Kerala until Friday, under the influence of a low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, the low-pressure area currently positioned over the Bay of Bengal is expected to move in a north-easterly direction and gradually weaken within the next 24 hours. In addition, a cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea near the southern Kerala coast. The combined impact of these weather systems is likely to bring intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms to several parts of the state over the coming days.

Weather officials indicated that while widespread heavy rainfall is not expected at present, localized thundershowers may occur, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged the public to take necessary precautions as daytime temperatures continue to rise across the state. Authorities warned that the increasing heat levels could lead to serious health issues such as sunstroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration.

People are advised to limit direct exposure to sunlight, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing, and ensure adequate rest. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, have been asked to exercise extra caution.

Officials emphasized that although rainfall is expected in the coming days, high humidity combined with rising temperatures could intensify discomfort. The public is encouraged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety advisories issued by authorities.
