Dima Hasao (Assam), 23 February (HS): A section of an under-construction bridge along National Highway 27 collapsed at Dolai Chunga under Harangajao police station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, injuring one worker and raising fresh questions over infrastructure safety in the region, locals informed on Monday.

The bridge formed part of the ongoing work on the Nrimbanglo–Harangajao stretch of NH-27, a key road corridor aimed at strengthening connectivity in the hill district. The construction of this stretch had been entrusted to DRA, the executing agency for the project.

Officials said the structure was still incomplete when a portion of it suddenly gave way, sending down concrete slabs and other construction materials. A worker present at the site sustained minor injuries and was provided medical attention locally. No casualties have been reported.

Personnel from the district administration and police rushed to the spot soon after the incident. An initial assessment has begun to determine the circumstances leading to the structural failure, while a detailed inquiry is expected to follow.

The Nrimbanglo–Harangajao segment is considered strategically important for the connectivity of Dima Hasao, a district often affected by difficult terrain and transport constraints. The highway expansion is part of broader efforts to improve road infrastructure across Assam’s hill areas.

Authorities are yet to release further details as investigations continue.--------------
