Guwahati, 16 February (HS): The Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began on a stormy note on Monday as opposition legislators created a ruckus during Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya’s address. Despite continuous sloganeering and disruption, the Governor completed his full speech in the House.
Barely five minutes into the 40-minute address, MLAs belonging to the Indian National Congress, All India United Democratic Front, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and an Independent member trooped into the Well of the House. Holding placards and raising slogans, they attempted to disrupt the proceedings and gathered near the podium.
Some legislators tried to throw copies of the Governor’s address towards the podium. Marshals on duty immediately intervened, seized the booklets, and removed placards and papers displayed by the protesting members. More than 20 security personnel formed a protective cordon around the Governor, while over 30 opposition MLAs remained in the Well throughout the speech.
The protesting MLAs raised slogans over an alleged controversial video involving the Chief Minister and demanded justice for noted singer Zubeen Garg. As the Governor continued his address amid the din, a few members sat on the floor of the Well in protest.
Unfazed by the disruptions, Acharya proceeded with his speech, outlining the government’s developmental initiatives, welfare schemes, and key achievements over the past five years.
The ongoing session is the last full Assembly sitting under the present government ahead of the state elections. A Vote on Account is scheduled to be tabled on Tuesday to secure interim financial approval before the polls.----------
