Guruvayur, 14 Feb (H.S.):A 50-year-old homemaker allegedly ended her life following threats from a private moneylender in Iringappuram near Guruvayur today morning. The deceased has been identified as Jumailla, wife of Shihab of Puthu Veedu.

According to family members, Jumailla was found with severe burn injuries in the backyard of her house in the early hours of Thursday. Though she was rushed for help, she had succumbed to her injuries. Police have recovered a suicide note from the residence, which reportedly details the distress she had been facing over mounting financial pressure and alleged intimidation.

Her son, Shinas, stated that about a year ago, Jumailla had borrowed ₹50,000 at high interest from a local woman. The family claims that although Jumailla had been paying ₹10,000 per month as interest alone for nearly eight months, she was unable to continue payments for the past two months due to financial difficulties.

The suicide note allegedly mentions that the lender had been threatening her over the delayed payments. It further states that the woman had warned she would return to the house accompanied by her brother if the money was not repaid immediately. The family alleges that the lender had visited their home and issued threats shortly before the incident.

In the note, Jumailla reportedly appealed to others to take care of her children. “Please look after my children,” she wrote, expressing concern for their future.

Relatives say the incident occurred soon after the alleged confrontation at the house. Jumailla is believed to have taken the extreme step in the backyard of the property, where her body was later discovered.

Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the circumstances leading to her death. Officials said they are examining the suicide note and recording statements from family members and neighbours to determine whether charges related to abetment to suicide or unlawful moneylending practices are applicable.

The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of unregulated high-interest lending and the severe emotional and financial strain it can place on vulnerable families.
