New Delhi, 11 February (H.S.): On Wednesday, the Supreme Court, while hearing the bail plea of Tasleem Ahmad—an accused in the conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots—issued notice to Delhi Police. The bench presided over by Justice Arvind Kumar passed these orders.
Tasleem Ahmad has challenged in the Supreme Court the Delhi High Court's rejection of his bail application. On September 2, 2025, the Delhi High Court dismissed the bail pleas of Tasleem Ahmad and nine other accused, ruling that mere delay in trial cannot suffice as grounds for bail.
During the Supreme Court hearing, Tasleem Ahmad's counsel Mahmood Pracha sought to sever this plea from those of other co-accused, a request the court approved. Pracha stated that Tasleem Ahmad merely participated in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act but was arrested on June 24, 2020, on charges of terrorist activities.
Notably, the February 2020 Delhi riots resulted in at least 53 deaths and numerous injuries.
