
Kolkata, 09 January (H.S.): Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday visited the New Town campus of the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) in Kolkata. Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar accompanied him during the visit.
During the inspection, the ministers reviewed various departments of the hospital and expressed satisfaction over the quality of healthcare services being provided. Following the inspection, the Union Health Minister held a meeting with doctors and staff members, during which he appreciated the institution’s overall functioning and dedication.
Addressing the gathering, Nadda said that the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute has made a significant contribution to cancer treatment, education, and research in the country. He highlighted that CNCI is India’s first government cancer hospital to receive certification from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), describing it as a major achievement and a historic milestone.
The minister also lauded the institute’s efforts in research and innovation, noting that CNCI has emerged as a leading centre in the fields of cancer education and capacity building. He expressed confidence that the institute would continue to strengthen its role in cancer care and research in the coming years.
Notably, the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute is one of the 27 Regional Cancer Centres functioning under the Government of India. Established in 1950 in the Hazra area of Kolkata, the institute currently operates from two campuses with a combined capacity of 670 beds. It has also developed a robust and advanced research ecosystem.
The Union Health Minister reiterated that CNCI is well-positioned to provide improved and comprehensive cancer care services to patients from across the country in the future.
