Dhaka, 09 January (H.S.): The policy-making syndicate of Dhaka University resolved Thursday to rename Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall as Shaheed Usman Hadi Hall and Captain Sitara Parvin Hall respectively, stripping nomenclature tied to Bangladesh's founding father amid a sweeping de-Awami League purge.
University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmad confirmed the decision, noting the syndicate forwarded the renaming proposal to the Senate for final ratification following a Thursday meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
Ahmad emphasized the move reflects post-upheaval recalibration honoring 1971 Liberation War heroes—Usman Hadi, a student activist martyred in battle, and Captain Sitara Parvin, a trailblazing female officer—over Sheikh Mujib and his wife.
Syndicate Sacks Awami League-Aligned Professors
In the same session, the syndicate terminated four professors affiliated with the ousted Awami League—Jeenat Huda, A.K.M. Jamal Uddin, Sadeka Halim, and Mashiyur Rahman—after framing charges against them, issuing show-cause notices demanding responses within one week.
This overhaul, targeting symbols of Sheikh Hasina's erstwhile regime toppled in August 2024 student-led uprising, signals interim government's resolve to expunge perceived authoritarian vestiges from academia, with Senate poised to cement the transformative edicts.
