-Assembly Proceedings Adjourned Until Thursday
New Delhi, 07 January (H.S.): Delhi Cabinet ministers and BJP chief whip Abhay Verma wrote to the Assembly Speaker on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, demanding the immediate cancellation of Leader of Opposition Atishi's membership and the filing of criminal charges against her for her alleged derogatory remarks on Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa informed journalists in the Assembly premises that Chief Whip Abhay Verma and ministers jointly addressed Speaker Vijender Gupta via letter, condemning Atishi's statement from her seat as indecent, shameful, and a breach of decorum.
Sirsa insisted that Atishi warrants criminal prosecution, instant expulsion from the Delhi Assembly, and imprisonment, declaring that those who insult Guru Tegh Bahadur belong not in the House but in Tihar Jail.
Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh echoed this, urging the Speaker to take cognizance of Atishi's actions, which he said wounded the Assembly and the nation by mocking the Guru who sacrificed his life alongside family to fortify India's integrity.
Proceedings commenced tumultuously as BJP members protested Atishi's comments on Sikh Gurus, demanding an apology; Speaker Gupta first adjourned for half an hour, then suspended House business until Thursday amid unrelenting uproar.
Post-adjournment, BJP legislators demonstrated outside, encircling the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the premises to press for Atishi's apology and stern action.
