Shivsagar (Assam), 7 January (HS): A police firing incident was reported in the Diroi area of Dimow on Tuesday night, in which an attacker identified as Ranjit Pandav was killed while police were attempting to disarm him.

According to police sources, Ranjit Pandav, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, went on a violent rampage with a sharp weapon (dao), attacking his neighbours and creating panic in the locality. A husband and wife sustained serious injuries after being assaulted by the accused.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and attempted to control the situation and disarm Pandav. When efforts failed and the situation escalated, police opened fire in self-defence, resulting in the death of the attacker.

The injured couple were immediately shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition has been stated to be critical.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and further details are awaited.----------
