IMD forecast rain in Kerala: Yellow alert issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki
Yellow alert in Kerala districts
Rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram,08 Jan (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the likelihood of rainfall across Kerala beginning tomorrow, with light to moderate showers expected over several parts of the state over the next three days. In view of the changing weather pattern and the possibility of intense spells, a yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts on Saturday.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the weather activity is linked to a well-marked low-pressure system that was earlier positioned over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. This system has now intensified into a depression and is showing signs of further strengthening.

Meteorological officials said the system is likely to intensify further over the next 24 hours and could become a severe depression. Over the following 48 hours, it is expected to move in a west-northwesterly direction and travel towards the southwest Bay of Bengal. Though the system is not directly approaching the Kerala coast, its influence is expected to enhance moisture flow and trigger rainfall across the state.

As a result, Kerala is likely to experience light to moderate rain on January 9, 10, and 11. In districts placed under yellow alert, isolated spells of heavy rainfall are possible. The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.

Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly in hilly and landslide-prone regions of Pathanamthitta and Idukki, have been advised to remain cautious. Authorities may issue further advisories depending on the movement and intensity of the system over the next day.

Despite the rainfall forecast over land, the IMD has clarified that there are currently no restrictions on fishing activities along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts. Sea conditions in these regions are expected to remain largely favourable, and fishermen can continue operations as usual.

The IMD continues to closely monitor the evolving weather system and has urged the public to follow official updates and advisories. Further warnings or alerts may be issued if there are significant changes in the system’s strength or trajectory in the coming days.
